My friend and I had a blast at this movie last Friday, but not for the reason you would expect. We literally laughed through the entire film - and what was even more fun was that the entire theater was laughing, too. The dialogue and plot were so thin and badly written, and the intense scenes so implausible, that it was hilarious. As the movie ended, I think all of us sat staring at the screen wondering if that really was the ending - that the credits were about to prove it was all over - that me, my friend, and the entire theater, cracked up all over again.

User Reviews

Setting your expectations low for a movie is always a good idea. That way you never come out disappointed. With Insurgent, I figured it was just the same film as Divergent, just rehashed. It's not exactly a fresh and bold new idea, but it did feel different than the first. And definitely better. With newcomers Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts the film gets elevated by terrific performances across the board. The cast is great but the CGI doesn't look as fake and the story is less(ish) confusing than Divergent. I will say it didn't bother me at all later in the movie, but it was quite funny and awkward to see Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, and Theo James all with Shailene Woodley on screen together, considering they have each been a film love interest.
The main problem with Divergent was the screenplay. I thought it was too confusing for someone who wasn't familiar with the book series. While Insurgent will be puzzling for newcomers, I felt less confused this time around than last. There's a lot going on. Whole lot of characters that fall in and out of the story without much to do at times, but the performances saved the film. I think if you try to forget about the unexplainable elements of the film your viewing experience is enhanced. For example, I don't remember too much about Tobias' back story or even the exact intentions of Jeanine, but I let the movie play out without complaining. Jai Courtney's character, though terminator like, was an improvement over the one-note character in Divergent. I also thought the chemistry between the leads of Miles Teller, Theo James, and Shailene Woodley were much better this time around. Woodley one again gives an emotionally powerful performance, even if not all of it is actually real, it felt legit. I keep talking about her ability to cry on screen but it's true, the woman can shed a tear.
I think one of the main problems with the film is the inconsistencies with some character decisions. I didn't read the books but I just became baffled with some of the directions that Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort's characters. There is too much back and forth for my liking. Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts both steal each of their respected scenes. And although for the former there isn't a whole lot to do, I enjoyed watching her character arc unfold. The ending is a big animal to tackle. And without spoilers I cant talk too much about it, but I will say I was pretty indifferent. I almost feel like they could end the franchise right there. But at the same time I guess there is more of this world to explore, no pun intended. So with a few unneeded characters and with plenty of confusing character decisions, Insurgent turns out to be an okay sci-fi. It's nowhere near as poor as the reviews and much better than the first, but there's still plenty to improve on for the next.

Tomorrowland (2015) Full Movie Download

Director: Brad Bird

Storyline

Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as "Tomorrowland."

User Reviews

If you can overlook the shoddy sets, painted backdrops, lousy dubbing, and mediocre scriptwork, Tomorrowland is actually a halfway decent and somewhat watchable little flick. It starts out in rip roaring fashion, with our hero (genre veteran George Cloonney) watching an out of control man rip the bodice from a struggling girl from an alternate dimension called Tomorrowland. Incensed by this brutality and no doubt offended by the film's one and only true PG- 13 scene, she rams her fist through a brick wall and kills the man with mannikin magic!. Enter the film's male hero, a reclusive inventor and a relentlessly curious teen, who scolds his sister for opening the portal on this deadly and forbidden realm. The story then commences in earnest, as these clowns end up protecting a poor orphan girl who has a valuable future object that a nefarious criminal syndicate is desperate to obtain. Much mayhem ensues, though the film remains chaste and relatively bloodless after its promising beginning. Like most Disby cheapies, the film lifts musical cues from the studio's legendary past--most notably in this case, Disby Land itself ! Disby video also includes some rather unique features, including a copyright notice plastered across the opening 30 seconds of the feature, and a narrated copyright warning after the film is over!

Doug Harris (Josh Gad) is a lovable but socially awkward groom-to-be with a problem: he has no best man. What ensues is a hilarious wedding charade as they try to pull off the big con, and an unexpected budding bromance between Doug and his fake best man Jimmy.

Doug is a nerdy introvert who is about to get married to a beautiful girl Gretchen. However, with two weeks to go before their grand wedding, Doug still could not come up with a Best Men and six groomsmen. Enter the smooth-talking hustler Jimmy who runs a Best Man for rent business to provide what Doug so desperately needed: a best friend. The spoofy title comes from the traditional Best Man duty of bringing the wedding rings during the ceremony.

Many wedding comedies would be about the bride, like "My Best Friend's Wedding" or "Bride Wars." There have been movies about the parents, like "Father of the Bride" or "Mother of the Bride". There have been been movies about the "The Wedding Planner" or "The Wedding Singer' or even "Wedding Crashers.' More recently, there had films about members of the entourage of either gender, "The Hangover" and "Bridesmaids." As a point of distinction, "The Wedding Ringer" is an uncommon wedding comedy made from the point of view of the groom.

Josh Gad is well-cast as the shy and socially-inept groom-to-be Doug. With his chubby frame, smiling face and polite demeanor, it is not hard to rally behind him and root him on. It is not really hard to conceive how a significant number of men could face the problems as Doug, not having male friends close enough to call a best man or groomsmen. He is easy for the audience to identify with.

Kevin Hart is a natural to play the boisterous and gregarious Jimmy, who had to fit in all the tall tales that Doug told Gretchen about his imaginary "best friend" dubiously named Bic. Despite his character's filthy mouth prone to profanity, Hart still manages to be funny and engaging in a potentially annoying role.

The other actors portraying the "groomsmen" were a rowdy random bunch of the strangest types of men. They were hit and miss in their jokes, many times coming off as too cringe-worthy. Easily recognizable among them is hefty, long-haired Jorge Garcia. The very final scene is even a well- placed reference to Garcia's most famous role on the hit TV thriller series "Lost."

As the bride Gretchen, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting basically reprises her breakthrough role as a sexy but flaky girl in an unlikely relationship with a nerd on hit TV comedy series "Big Bang Theory". More positively impressive is Olivia Thirlby as Gretchen's younger sister Alison. Ms. Thirlby is very pretty and smart, making a mark despite her limited screen time.

Overall, "The Wedding Ringer," with all its derivative, shallow and raunchy humor, still manages to come across with some insightful ideas about male friendships and its intricacies. The lead pair of Josh Gad and Kevin Hart share a vibrant bromantic comic chemistry together that is a lot of fun to watch. Looking forward to watching more film projects starring these two upcoming young comedians. 6/10.

This opportunity will reunite him with an old friend but will also put him in the middle of a power game between the American and Chinese government as well as an arch villain hacker whose identity he has to find if he wants to keep his freedom and his life.

User Reviews

If you like taut, slow-burn suspense thrillers like Alfred Hitchcock's films and 'The Drop' in 2014 with James Gandolfini (which I thought was excellent), then please *go see this movie* in the theater; I think you will like it. (If the negative reviewers here thought they were getting a superhero movie like 'The Avengers', then they weren't paying attention to the previews :-) .) Blackhat features a computer hacker (Chris Hemsworth) who is furloughed from prison to counter-attack an elite cybercrime team. The cybercrime technology in the movie includes current techniques such as RATs (Remote Access Trojans) and keypad trackers. Following the movie plot is important -- the script is sparse (my only real objection); so it's important to track the plot developments. Michael Mann's camera-work is impressive during chase scenes, and his animations of cybercrime technology processes are inventive. I plan to see it a second time in the theater with other friends.

Nope. Not even close. The characters are pale colorless versions of the originals lacking any depth or spark and screaming, bratty children are not entertaining on either side of the screen. The story line is watered down and lacks the nuances that made the original a great movie. The suspense was nonexistent; the few scares there were relied on cheesy shock scenes rather than good film making. The few plot points that weren't watered down or eliminated entirely were exaggerated to ludicrous levels. The music was utterly forgettable and the obvious attempts to update the setting for 21st century viewers were trite and cliché. If you want to see this movie the way it was meant to be seen, rent the original. This one doesn't hold a candle to it. Don't waste your time or money.

The issue of journalistic integrity comes to the fore in this excellent story about two men who form an unlikely and bizarre friendship. Both men are emotionally damaged, both have had run-ins with authority and each identifies with the other. That one is disgraced journalist and the other a mass murderer makes the story even more intense. The movie brings out how emotions can distort reasoning and cause people to project all kinds of feelings onto another until truth becomes blurred. It is the blurring of the truth that takes place here. The movie does an outstanding job of showing how, in defiance of the intense pressure that was being applied to both men to end their communications, the friendship evolves. It occurs in stages. The details of how it happens and how it effects both men is what this movie is about. Jonah Hill and James Franco are outstanding in their respective roles as the journalist and the mass murderer. User Reviews

Overview: The story of Cinderella can be traced back to early Egypt, China, France, Germany and many other countries from around the world. The most well-known versions were written by Charles Perrault, Cendrillon, and by the Brothers Grimm, Aschenputtel. There have been countless film, television and stage adaptations of the iconic story, but the most well-known adaptation is Walt Disney's 1950 animated film.

I first fell in love with Walt Disney's animated film when I was just three-years-old. It was actually the first Disney film that I ever saw as a child. I can still remember being captivated by the story and singing along with the songs. It was as though a spell had been cast upon me, but the magic never wore off at midnight. There were no words to describe the level of excitement I had when I first found out that Disney was developing a live-action film of the timeless story.

Review: Tonight, I had the opportunity to attend an advance screening of the live-action version of Walt Disney's most beloved animated film, Cinderella. What I enjoyed most about the latest "animation to live-action" treatment, is that it's a relatively straightforward telling of the classic story. While Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent were unnecessary dark and edgy re- imaginings of their animated predecessors, Cinderella is retold respectfully and refreshingly for the new generation. And yes... IT'S NOT A MUSICAL!

The Cast: Lily James (Cinderella) and Richard Madden (Prince Charming) were rightfully chosen for their iconic roles. Lily truly captured the true essence of Cinderella's innocence, charm and beauty. Richard... those eyes... ahem... was truly charming in every sense of the word. I loved the chemistry between the Prince and Cinderella -- I don't think I've seen such chemistry between two characters in a Disney film for a very long time. It's very refreshing to see a fairy tale romance blossom!

Cate Blanchett (Lady Tremaine) and Helena Bonham-Carter (Fairy Godmother) were perfectly cast for their respective roles. Cate not only brought a lot of depth to her character, but you could tell she was enjoying the role as the malicious stepmother. Helena not only brought a bit of comic relief to the film, but she was definitely fun to watch -- although you can't help but wonder if Mrs. Weasley actually zapped Bellatrix Lestrange into a parallel universe. Hmm?

Director and Writer: I personally believe that Disney made the right decision to hire Kenneth Branagh to direct the film and Chris Weitz to write the screenplay. As I was watching the film on the big screen tonight, I could tell that they both approached the story with deep understanding and, most importantly, respect. I was genuinely relieved that it wasn't ruined by some unnecessary "dark" and "edgy" plot twist. Phew!

Score and Costumes: I absolutely loved Patrick Doyle's score for the film and found it to be quite fitting with the story. It was perfectly timed and it drew you into the fairy tale world. I'm definitely happy that I bought the soundtrack. Sandy Powell's costumes, though silly at times, were excellent. I don't think I've seen such beautiful designs and vibrant colours in one film since the Golden Age of Hollywood. I genuinely hope Sandy will be nominated for an Oscar next year for those stunning costumes. Bravo!

Sets and Special Effects: The film itself is a visual marvel -- especially for the fairy tale genre. I was truly swept away by the lavish sets that were designed by Dante Ferretti. I don't think I've seen such a breathtaking production since the late 1930's when Hollywood used to put a lot of effort into their sets. The special effects were equally breathtaking, with the dress transformation and the carriage-to-pumpkin scenes being two of my favourite visual highlights. Very impressive!

Running Time: My only disappointment was the running time of the theatrical cut. I personally believe that it should have been 10 minutes or 15 minutes longer to flesh out the story more. The film flowed smoothly and didn't feel rushed, but there were a number of scenes and dialogue that were, unfortunately, left on the cutting room floor. Hopefully Disney will release an extended cut, or include those deleted scenes on the home media release. You hear me, Disney?!

Verdict: Despite my issue with the running time, I genuinely believe that Disney did something right with their latest live-action film. While most people were probably expecting a sword-wielding action hero, I'm happy that Disney treated their most beloved character with the uttermost care and respect. While the previous live-action films were all about style, they lacked substance and, unfortunately, heart. Cinderella, however, has style, substance and, most importantly, heart. I'm genuinely happy that Disney kept the magic alive in this film. If Walt Disney himself were alive today, I'm sure he would be proud to see his most treasured little saviour be retold to the new generation in a beautiful and charming way. Bravo!

Note: Make sure to stay during the whole end credits as it's accompanied by Lily James singing a beautiful rendition of "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" and Helena Bonham Carter singing a much humorous version of "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo". A wonderful nostalgic tribute to the animated film!

The Rock is a curious choice for a leading man. His enormous physique is perfect for the cartoon world of GI Joe, or the Fast and Furious films, and Michael Bay exploited it to grand guignol effect in Pain & Gain, but here it's problematic. The man looks so strong you can't ever buy he's in real danger, and he can't yet convey the emotional range you'd need to be convinced he's emotionally vulnerable either. That, however, is the least of San Andreas's problems.

San Andreas is one in a very long line of PG-rated films dating back to the mid-nineties that engulf American coastal cities with CGI.Thousands die (including a WTF cameo from Kylie Minogue) but you'd never know it, the insensitivity and cowardice of the PG rating meaning the film can happily exploit 9/11 imagery without it really feeling like anyone got hurt. In this day and age, this feels borderline insensitive. More so, the script feels the need to turn it up to 9.6 on the Richter scale of stupidity and then take itself seriously, no better represented here as Paul Giamatti doing his most serious seriousness that it vaults into true camp. Contrivance is heaped on contrivance to contrived effect, and suspension of disbelief is suspended to suspenseless effect.

Occasionally between all the shifting CGI plates, the film quietens down and here it actually becomes moderately engaging, before it asks the cast to gaze at a CGI American flag unfurling against a CGI magic hour and crass reassurances that everything is fine, but it hasn't earned the right to reassure us because it isn't any good. The sound crew do sterling work, and little Art Pilkington from The Impossible show the rest of the cast how to be genuinely charming and funny, the one survivor (okay, Carla Gugino is lovely and warm as always) of this digital disaster foisted on an unexpected audience, the true victims of this tale.

The idea of having Melissa McCarthy as an action hero would already make everyone predict that Spy will definitely pander the comedian to be just the funny fat woman who may screw up her own mission caused by a number of outrageous antics. But the approach of the actual movie turns out to be a little smarter. Yes, it's a spy comedy that somewhat mocks the genre, especially James Bond which one of the characters is basically a parody of him. But aside from that, it's just another spy movie, but with an odd choice of a hero. It's pretty silly, but the movie doesn't go lazy with this idea. Spy is a little too long than it deserves and the plot doesn't get much of the focus, but when it sticks to its own laughs and spy movie tendencies, it actually works.

Unlike many spy comedies today, this one doesn't go as over-the-top cartoony as, let's say, Kingsman. The main plot doesn't exactly matter if you can follow it or not, and the movie does acknowledge it. The real story here is how the main hero doesn't seem to cut out to this job. The film doesn't downgrade this character either, Susan Cooper is actually good at being a desk-bound analyst and she really takes her job seriously. It's just that the agency don't wholly trust her due to her physicality and behavior, that she ends up being given with unimpressive identities. She's clearly not that professional in the field and that also lead herself in some awkward situations, but you can see that she's really trying to make things work. Again the film doesn't pander into obvious humor, maybe sometimes, but that's not the exact punchline. In fact, we do see the character grow into this duty that it almost seem to be an origin story, and that's definitely the case. It's trying to make her a new action hero for a franchise, but still sticking to the comedy roots, of course.

If the movie isn't being funny, then the action movie side is still worth watching, if the plot was a little careless. But there is still some interesting elements in it. The action scenes are actually well done, and surprisingly violent. Regarding this as a silly comedy, there are times the movie gets unexpectedly grim. But it strangely helps building tension, since this is still an action movie. The acting really brings it to the table. While many people are getting tired of seeing Melissa McCarthy as the obnoxious comic relief character that her recent films have often treated her, this movie manages to slightly moderate that side of the talent and establishes more of a real character out of her. Jason Statham stays with his usual character, but he finds a comedic sense to it, which delightfully stole every scene that he's in.

Spy keeps things basic, it doesn't need to completely make fun of the genre until it becomes totally otherworldly. The real center of the movie is apparently its main character learning to fit in to this dangerous side of her job in spite of her appearance and attitude, but in a naturally amusing way. The plot is still overlong and forgettable, but as long as you focus on the characters, humor and action; it's quite entertaining. The main concept may not sound exciting, but the film just handles it pretty well.

Complicated hero who is easy to latch onto. Fantastic plot that is plausible in this environment. Terrifying nemesis, horrifying and relentless. Non-stop action and brilliant stunt sequences that will make you cringe. This movie will have you feeling parched and gritty. Usually Not a fan of 3d - however, it works perfectly here. This movie has managed to honor the previous films without being clunky about it. if you love mutant vehicles, art cars, burning man, etc. you will be satisfied. A few scenes that were taking place in cobbled together 1000 hp vehicles at 50mph where it was quieter inside than a modern Cadillac the absence of the din of machinery for the sake of dialogue was the only thing that bothered me.

The premise is nothing really original. There have been many many other movies with certain and slight variations of this theme. Some that come to mind are "The Crow" and "Pumpkinhead" just to mane a few. I'm sure there are plenty of others.

The acting was OK but nothing spectacular. No potential Oscar material here.

The special effects again are just OK but no eye candy here. I always thought blood was opaque however in this movie it looks kind of like dark fruit punch.

There are some serious plot holes throughout the movie. There is such a lack of character development that its amazing anyone watches the whole thing through. Where some very simple dialogue should be, there is none, just bizarre images. Images don't make up for plot explanation. I guess there is a certain amount of viewer imagination and or interpretation required here. I detest movies with plot holes and character under-development. Anyhow that about sums it up. Enjoy and use your imagination.

Review: This is another one of those low budget action movies, with terrible acting and a silly storyline. Steven Seagal is hired to take out a drug dealer and uncovers a drug ring that involves trafficking and prostitution. One of the girls escapes a torturer and just happens to run into Seagal who, against his morals, uses his skills to save her. She then gives him information to take-down the drug and prostitution lords with the help of his trusted friend, Chi. Seagal, actually wasn't to bad in the movie and I liked the relationship between him and Chi, his sidekick, but the film looked cheap and some of the acting and one liners were awful. The action scenes weren't bad that bad, especially from Seagal & Chi, but it's predictable from the beginning to end. I wasn't expecting that much from the film, so I wasn't overly disappointed. It's basically what it says on the tin!

Round-Up: It's a shame that Steven Seagal only gets the chance to star in straight to DVD movies because his cool demeanor and great fighting skills were great in movies like Under Siege and Marked For Death. After he started to put on weight, his movies became terrible and he wasn't taken that seriously in Hollywood so he must be starring in these low budget movies to pays the bills. Vinnie Jones has also become a straight to DVD actor who plays the same type of roles all of the time. Since his move to Hollywood from football, he has only started in a handful of big budget movies and his career hasn't really blown up like Jason Statham. It seems like he is also just starring in these movies to pay the bills! I did like Seagals sidekick, played by Byron Mann who starred in the terrible Streetfighter movie and had small parts in Red Corner, The Corrupter and Catwoman but the rest of the cast wasn't that great.

I recommend this movie to people who are into their action/crime movies about Steven Seagal taking down a drug ring. 3/10

If you stopped for an hour and dissected this film you WILL find problems, like how the audience is meant to root for borderline sociopathic criminals or how the structure isn't what they're used to... HOWEVER, if you go in just expecting to be entertained and if you have a particular fondness for hustle movies, this is one enjoyable movie. The charming but not over-the-top humour consistently keeps the story entertaining and by not following the usual structure of a movie this kind, and ultimately the one the trailer promised, it offers something new to the mix. I can see the multiple twists as a turn off for some expecting a deeper film but if you know what you're in for I think the multiple twists in the film's final act will one-after-another bring a smile to your face and even have you laughing. Will Smith harnesses his charm to success in this flick and Margot has effectively proved herself as not being a one-hit-wonder. This is not a bad film, though I do believe your enjoyment hinges on your expectations when going into it. Don't expect the next Ocean's 11, expect a charming, funny, well acted, smartly written, hustle movie that will undoubtedly be drowned out by mixed reviews from people expecting gold and can't appreciate really good silver.

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan had zero sex appeal, for me anyway. I hoped I was going to see something a bit more provocative than predictable. However, what unfolded on the screen was a story without enough substance. So I grabbed the first hard cover volume from my aunt's large collection of "literature." She warned me not to expect much and she was right. I somehow got through 150 pages of poorly written boredom and gave up. I'm glad I saw the film for free. On the positive side, I can report that the Music is by one of my favorite film composers, Danny Elfman. Plus, the soundtrack includes music from the likes of Beyonce, Ellie Golding and many others which helps but does not rescue the largely silly visual acrobatics. Maybe my opinion would be different were I a repressed housewife or middle aged spinster. But that is as stupid a remark as the movie itself, given I am a man.

I like robots. I like robots that fight. So if I had gotten my full dose of fighting robots I might've been nicer to this movie. But I didn't get what I wanted. What I got was a trifle of a film that pretends to give connection from a kid that I was sick of in the first 5 minutes. I really did NOT like that whining, overacting slimy kid. The fact that I had to sit through painfully cheesy scenes with that little ham actor and Hugh Jackman made the whole thing barely watchable. By the way Hugh, what the hell kinda accent was that? So, chessy acting, predictable story, hack writing, good (not remarkable) special effects and yet this drivel went on to make $256 million, not including licensing, which I assume will be gigantic when Real Steel 2 comes out!?!? I'm not upset, just disappointed.

"Fast Five" is the best "The Fast and the Furious" movie of all that have released until now. And that's it because in this movie for one more time we have the same cast with some additions and some removes but the plot and the effects of this movie is really amazing.

I liked this movie very much because of the plot and I am referring to storyline of the movie and how this story connects all the previous movies and how this movie will continue to the next movies that will come out.

We have many good interpretations once again and I think that all the gang of Dominic Toretto made a really good interpretations. I also liked very much the interpretation of Dwayne Johnson who plays as Luke Hobbs a federal agent and Elsa Pataky who plays as Elena Neves a police officer.

Our World War: Season 1, Episode 1 The First Day Full Movie Download

Following a single company of riflemen and machine gunners as they fight the first battle of the war against a vast German army, a battle which delivers the first four Victoria Crosses of the war.

Director: Bruce Goodison

Writer: Joe Barton
Stars: Theo Barklem-Biggs, Jefferson Hall, Calum Callaghan

Storyline

Two weeks into the Great War a detachment of the 4th Royal Fusiliers, led by Lieutenant Maurice Dease arrives in South Belgium, setting up temporary camp in the town of Mons. Following a nocturnal encounter with Belgian refugees they learn that their task is to defend the Nimy bridge over the Mons canal against the German advance though the Royal Engineers would prefer to blow the bridge up. Dease captures a wounded German who tells him that he is not ready for the conflict but Dease, a professional soldier, waves this aside. However, after an eight hour skirmish the Germans win the battle of Mons. Four or the British combatants are awarded the Victoria Cross, three of whom will survive the war though Dease's medal is given posthumously.

The issue of whether Joe Barton's drama is true to historical fact is academic here; what matters more is the way in which it depicts the horrors of World War One in a graphic manner, while showing the unbelievable courage of men under fire.

The mainspring of the episode lies in the contrast between what the British soldiers expect, as they try to protect the landscape around Mons, and what they actually encounter. The first part shows the conflicts within the British forces, mostly based on class and national difference. The Australian Fred Steele (Jefferson Hall) comes across as a practical, no-nonsense leader managing to get things done - unlike his British counterpart Dease (Dominic Thorburn), a well-meaning yet ineffectual member of the British upper class vainly trying to keep his troops under control.

Yet such petty conflicts pale into insignificance beside the conflict to come. Director Bruce Goodison adumbrates what is to come through the use of aerial shots - resembling the photos taken by US Army planes during the recent Iraq war - of the lights of the British troops on one side of a river, and the huge German force piling up on the other. We know in advance that the conflict will be an unequal one; and so it proves, as the British are annihilated, forcing Steele to bid a hasty retreat leaving one machine-gunner (Theo Barklem-Briggs) to hold the fort. Nonetheless the British do manage to stall the Germans, due in no small part to the individual heroism of the machine-gunner and an explosives expert (Calum Callaghan).

Shot in deliberately washed-out colors, with a musical score comprised of modern songs summing up the mood of the piece, "The First Day" is based on recollections by members of the Royal Fusiliers of the opening salvos of the war. The episode ends with a tribute to the troops that fought, with shots of the brigade museum at the Tower of London. This is not a pleasant piece to watch: director Goodison has deliberately shown how bloody the conflict actually was. Yet it is both condemnatory yet celebratory in tone - even though it might have been regarded as a defeat, the conflict showed how brave human beings can be under the most extreme circumstances.
